Students create a “Starry Night” in St Austell

Art and Design students, from Cornwall College’s Creative and Digital Academy, have once again showcased their incredible creativity and artistic skills, by painting the Asda underpass.

Following last year’s success, the Level 2 and 3 learners from the St Austell campus of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) transformed the space into a vibrant mural inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and the scenic local scenery.

The project, planned by student artists over the course of a year, aimed to give back to the community and clean up the local underpass – that is often covered in graffiti.

Reflecting on the overwhelmingly positive feedback, James Baggaley, study programme manager for art and photography at the St Austell campus, commented:

“We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from passers-by, everyone who saw the students working on the mural stopped to see how it was coming along and thanked them for creating an amazing feature wall.”

James added: “Our students have worked so hard on this project, and we’re incredibly proud of what they managed to produce in such a short time.”

Thanks to funding and assistance from the Cornwall Councillor Community Chest Grant, as well as Councillor Richard Williams-Pears, the students were able to turn their vision into reality.

David Atkinson-Beaumont, head of campus, said: “As the top further education college for education and training in Cornwall, this project exemplifies our students’ out in the real world, doing what they love. Those who progress onto our access to higher education programmes benefit from these experiences, equipping them for success in their future artistic endeavours.”

A total of sixteen students worked on this project, including: Libby Brookes, April Emery, Ayeisha Lammali, Gabrielle Lilly Shroff, Connie Rose St James, Madison Walker, Vincent Williams, who are all on the Level 2 Art and Design course. Jessica Drake, Ben Gorring, Ki Jackson, Melissa McFarlane, Oggy Moore, Star Ossitt and Ruby Pomery Level 3 Art and Design, Plus Iryna Karpova, who’s on the Access to HE Creative Arts programme.
