Course information

This programme is for those wishing to train to become a professional counsellor. It carries Gold Standard Accreditation awarded by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and successful completion means that you can practice independently as a qualified counsellor. For our next intake, attendance is required 1 day a week 9.30am to 4.30pm, term time only for 2 years.

The programme contains an in-depth module on personal development, as well as counselling practice, professional development and counselling theory and psychology modules.

You will develop your counselling skills, your understanding of the counselling process and expand your ability to be in a professional relationship with your client. You will do this within a Person Centred or Integrated framework and in the second year you will visit a range of counselling models.

You will be required to carry out 100 hours of counselling work with clients (in addition to counselling practice with peers) over the duration of the programme through placements with counselling agencies across Cornwall. We have strong links with placement providers and can support this process. You will need to keep accurate records of your client work, and if the placement does not provide supervision, you will need to engage a counselling supervisor to support your client work. Again, we can offer you guidance with this. Undertaking Person-Centred personal counselling whilst you are on the course is required and we would expect a minimum of 8 sessions with a qualified counsellor to be completed by the end of the course.

Additional expenses to budget for throughout the programme (please note these are the current sums and are subject to change):

Visit https://www.cornwall.ac.uk/counselling-at-cornwall-college/   to find out more about the Cornwall Counselling Institute

Personal counselling – approximately £30 upwards per hour.

Supervision – if not paid for or supplied by your placement, approximately £25 upwards per hour for individual supervision and approximately £20 per hour for group supervision. Across 2 years this will amount to around £400

Enhanced DBS Certificate (DBS means Disclosure and Barring Service, previously known as the Enhanced CRB) – £44. Students will need to meet the cost of their own DBS; however, many placements provide these free of charge.

Please note, that there is no automatic progression route between our courses. Each qualification requires a rigorous assessment process including an interview, and due to limited places, you may be placed on a waiting list or may not be successful on your first application.

Counselling Psychology 1

This module introduces students to the principles of counselling psychology. Analysis of concepts of self, psychological health and development of dysfunction provide a framework for examining the origins and assumptions of the person-centred approach to counselling.

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Account for the Person-Centred concepts of actualising and non-directivity with regard to their philosophical origins
2. Evaluate the theoretical principles of personality development from a Person-Centred perspective
3. Analyse the concept and key processes of dysfunction from a Person-Centred perspective

Personal and Professional Development 1

This module prepares for, and supports students in their placements, ensuring they work to a professional code of ethics and practice. It also provides a framework for regular and systematic opportunities for self-awareness work which are congruent with the core model.

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Identify, understand and apply the BACP Ethical Framework
2. Explore their own personal development including aspects of bias and judgement, making explicit links to Person-Centred personality theory
3. Demonstrate readiness to work as a counselling trainee within a counselling agency
4. Analyse the key functions of supervision and its application to practice, including referencing to working with EDI
5. Evaluate how relational group work has impacted on their development as a Person-Centred counsellor including referencing diversity within the group
6. Assess with examples the importance of giving and reflecting on feedback as part of their personal and professional development

Counselling Practice 1

This module aims to assist students in developing competence as a Person – Centred counsellor to a level where they are able to begin working with clients. The emphasis is on the core counselling conditions, the communication of these conditions, and the student’s ability to reflect on and evaluate their practice.

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate a range of counselling skills and the ability to give and reflect on feedback
2. Discuss their ability to work consistently within a classical non-directive Person-Centred framework
3. Identify and evaluate their use of the core conditions within counselling sessions
4. Identify and comment on key elements of their personal process within a counselling session

Counselling Psychology 2

This module examines the main paradigms used in contemporary counselling. In light of this exploration learners are invited to re-visit the Person- Centred model clarifying where they position themselves on the Person- Centred continuum in the light of relevant research findings.

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Independently research a model of counselling other than the Person- Centred model
2. Make a critical comparison between the model researched and the Person- Centred approach
3. Articulate their personal and professional philosophy of counselling

Personal and Professional Development 2

This module continues to provide regular and systematic opportunities for self-awareness work which is congruent with the Person–Centred model of counselling and supports them as counsellors. It also supports learners in developing their professional practice by introducing them to a range of different client issues.

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate and evaluate your ability to respond to the emotional demands of being a counsellor
2. Critically evaluate your experience of personal therapy and group work in relation to your personal and professional development
3. Present a self-assessment and participate in a feedback process demonstrating an ability to give, receive and reflect on feedback
4. Reflect on, review and evaluate their development within the counselling profession
5. Complete 100 hours of clinical practice under supervision

Counselling Practice 2

This module supports learners’ ongoing development as a professional reflective practitioner and facilitates their integration of further theoretical concepts into their work. To facilitate learners in offering the core conditions at a deeper level, thus moving towards the attainment of embed competence in their practice.

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate and critically evaluate the ability to apply theoretical concepts to their practice
2. Provide informed, relevant and useful feedback to peers on their practice and improve performance through reflecting on and responding to self, peer and tutor feedback
3. Demonstrate with examples the use of their own internal supervisor

You will need two qualifications to apply for the Diploma. A practical skills-based counselling qualification, from Level 2 upwards which contains tutor observations of skills practice, and have a qualification that carries 120 HE credits. This is usually our Level 4, a foundation degree, full degree or an equivalent qualification.

The Level 2 is required in addition to higher qualifications as all candidates need to evidence a level of competency using counselling skills, prior to acceptance on this professional training course.

Please note that Further Education qualifications do not carry Higher Education credits, therefore CPCAB qualifications at any level will need to be supported by a further qualification which carries 120 HE credits (Please see the Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Counselling which carries 120 HE credits on the Cornwall College website)

There are no exams on the course. Assessment is through written coursework, presentations and practical elements. We use a self, peer and tutor assessment model. We only provide the programme on a part time basis to provide the time needed for completion of the academic and practical components of the course.

Possible Progression (subject to approval):
