Engineering Student Engineering shapes the world around us, from the machines at the heart of the industry to the electronic devices we use at home – engineering is the future.

There’s no better place to start your career in this exciting industry than here at Cornwall College.

This course is all about mastering the essential skills that you’ll need during your engineering career, giving you experience with the very latest technology that is used within the industry. The focus is on developing your knowledge application, experimental and practical engineering techniques. Whilst preparing you to professionally present your findings and demonstrate these essential skills.

You will be using cutting-edge technology such as virtual welding equipment. As well as you will be using industry spec. equipment such as milling and turning machine, welding machines commonly used by coded and specialist welders donated by local employers, containing the latest control and automation components – experiences that prepare you for employment locally, regionally and beyond.

The Level 2 course is the perfect opportunity to discover the area of engineering you would like to specialise in, with tutors who will guide you through all of the potential opportunities.

At Cornwall College, we have enthusiastic and highly skilled engineering tutors with extensive industry experience, who are fully committed to helping you develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become a fully qualified engineer.

Successful completion of this course provides you with essential skills to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Technology course or the Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering.

Diploma in Engineering Technologies Level 2 is best suited if you are considering a career in Engineering.

The course will provide you with the competence required as a young engineer. You will gain exposure to a real life-engineering workshop and undertake practical assessments using relevant industry equipment and technology. You will also learn how to work within a team and progress in your maths and English skills.

Producing & Interpreting engineering drawings

Essential hand-fitting skills
Essential machining techniques
Welding & Fabrication skills
Milling and turning skills

You will need Maths and English plus two other GCSEs at Level 4 or successful completion of the level 1 engineering course or relevant industry experience (with evidence)

Visits/Trips to include Maintec & Mach show, Plymouth University and a range of local employers. Guest Speakers from Plymouth University, suppliers and specialists as well as Community and charitable projects.

You will be assessed through online assessment, practical assignments and through written reports. All assessment activity will be planned and the timetable shared with you at the beginning of the academic year. The assessments will be linked to the taught units and assessments will coincide with unit progress and completion. You will be informed of progress after the assessments, with overall progress tracked and available to view to ensure you can monitor progress towards agreed targets.

Once you have completed the Level 2 course, you’ll have skills and a real appreciation of engineering, ready to move on to the more advanced Level 3 course. Upon successful completion there is a potential that this could lead to an apprenticeship within the engineering industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider this option. The skills and knowledge gained on these engineering courses, are transferrable and recognised across the world should you wish to travel.
