Green Construction Skills Academy drives innovation in sustainable training in Cornwall

Cornwall College Camborne has official launched the Green Construction Skills Academy, marking a transformative chapter in sustainable construction training in Cornwall.

With advanced facilities and tailored programmes, the academy is set to prepare future construction professionals, and the existing workforce, with essential skills in eco-friendly and energy-efficient building technologies, working alongside top employers in the region.

During the official launch, attendees toured the college’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Brunel Skills Centre’s advanced engineering workshops and EV labs, and explored spaces dedicated to training in ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, solar thermal systems and solar electrical systems.

Head of Cornwall College Camborne, Luke Bazeley, highlighted the college’s pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future. He said: “As a community college, our mission is to serve the needs of the local community while driving forward a sustainable economy. The Green Construction Skills Academy is a vital step in preparing the workforce with the skills and expertise required to meet the challenges of a low-carbon future. By working closely with top employers and investing in cutting-edge facilities, we’re equipping individuals to lead the way in sustainable construction.”

She said: “Small businesses are at the heart of innovation and sustainability in our economy. The Green Construction Skills Academy provides an incredible opportunity to connect employers with the next generation of skilled workers, ensuring that Cornwall’s businesses have the tools and talent they need to thrive in a greener future. It’s also important for us to continue supporting initiatives such as this one.”

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place, with Inga Geach, sustainability and social value specialist from Cornwall Council, cutting the ribbon.

Cornwall Council’s investment has been instrumental in the creation of this facility, reflecting their commitment to fostering sustainable skills development and supporting the region’s transition to a greener economy.
