Course information

Joinery Courses This course will give you opportunities for work both locally and if you want to travel the world. The course will enable you to take your Joinery skills far beyond the level 2 and give you a more advanced understanding of building construction along with the part a Bench Joiner plays in the manufacture of building components and how they fit into the construction of all sorts of buildings. The course will enable you to work confidently in a Joinery workshop.

All of our training takes place in our state of the art joinery workshop to add a bit more work realism to the course that reflects the equipment available in industry. We have a large range to tools and equipment for you to practice with, you’ll also have access during the course to our wood machine shop to experience the machines we have. Your teaching will be delivered by highly experienced qualified trade’s people who have many years’ experience of working in the construction industry as bench joiners.

You will learn all the above as well as sharpening techniques, care of your tools and how to use then safely. How to use fixed machinery such as spindle moulder, CNC, four cutter, wall saw.

You will learn how to plan and undertake jobs independently with support from our staff when needed to enable you to complete your project. You will be involved in discussion about technique and methods.

You will be taught all aspects of joinery from cutting joints by machine to assemble windows with curved sections and then progressing to setting out and manufacturing kite winder staircases.

By the end of the course you will achieve a qualification, Yes! but you will also have the experience of the Joinery staff passed onto you and complete backup of that team which means that you will be able to work in any joinery shop in the world with confidence.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification.
• Functional Skills Level 2 in English and/or Maths will be considered as alternatives to GCSE, but a GCSE resit may be required depending on grade.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and maths and/or English at GCSE Grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.

A relevant Level 2 qualification and an interest and ability to work in a joinery environment.

You will be assessed variously, by exam, both online and written. You will also be assessed by your tutor through practical tasks.

Once you have completed your level 3, you could walk or carry on to undertake higher qualifications in construction management.
