Engineering Apprenticeship Engineering shapes the world around us, from the machines at the heart of the industry to the electronic devices we use at home – engineering is the future.

If the world of engineering does fascinate you, then this is the perfect course for you. The focus is on developing your knowledge application, experimental, research and practical engineering techniques. Whilst preparing you to professionally present your findings and demonstrate these essential skills. You’ll be using industry-standard technology as you work on exciting practical projects, studying a diverse range of engineering areas such as fabrication and welding, machining, electrical, maintenance, and manufacturing. You will cover content including pneumatics, welding techniques, manufacturing processes, electrical systems (industry motors and drives), PLCs, steam and refrigeration systems, it’s the perfect start to a career in engineering.

Diploma in Engineering Technologies Level 3 comes with considerable academic content preparing you for a potential future at a University; as well as the expected maths and science there will be units covering project management, design, engineering drawing, business and quality systems; arming you with an academic background to take on any challenge.

At Cornwall College, we have enthusiastic and highly skilled engineering tutors who are fully committed to helping you develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become a fully qualified engineer.

This course is offered at both Cornwall College St Austell and Cornwall College Camborne.

Our Camborne workshop features industry-standard equipment and kit. We have strong links with Fugro, Pendennis and A&P shipyards and train all their apprentices and also PALL and SERCO for aero, so employers know an engineering qualification from The Cornwall College Group means you will start off your career with the very best skills for an incredible journey in engineering.

This two-year course aims to give you an excellent foundation in all aspects of engineering.

Subjects covers include:
Manufacturing, both Computer-aided and manual.
Design, CAD and hand drafting.
Welding theory and practical.
Electrical and electronic principles
Mechanical Principles
Mathematics
CNC (Computerized Numerical Control)
Pneumatics
Health and safety and environmental considerations

Engineering is an extremely creative and stimulating occupation that will offer you the opportunity to be involved in both current and emerging technologies. As a successful engineer, you will not be just a technical expert but must also become an excellent communicator and team player.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification.
• Functional Skills Level 2 in English and/or Maths will be considered as alternatives to GCSE, but a GCSE resit may be required depending on grade.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and maths and/or English at GCSE Grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.

You will require Maths an English at Level 5 plus 3 other GCSEs also at Level 3, or successful completion of the level 2 engineering course or suitable industry experience.

Visits/Trips to include Maintec & Mach show, Plymouth University and a range of local employers. Guest Speakers from Plymouth University, suppliers and specialists, as well as Community and charitable projects.

You will be assessed through online assessment, practical assignments and through written reports. All assessment activity will be planned and the timetable shared with you at the beginning of the academic year. The assessments will be linked to the taught units and assessments will coincide with unit progress and completion. You will be informed of progress after the assessments, with overall progress tracked and available to view to ensure you can monitor progress towards agreed targets.

Once you have completed the Level 3 course, you’ll have knowledge, skills and a real understanding of engineering ready to move on to an apprenticeships or Higher Education. Achieving high grades will provide more opportunities in what is a diverse and well paid sector of the UK economy. Upon completion of this two year course you can progress onto the FdSc/HNC Engineering at Cornwall College or consider employment within the sector.
