Course information

Counselling Students This programme is for those wishing to train to become a professional counsellor. It carries Gold Standard Accreditation awarded by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and successful completion means that you can practice independently as a qualified counsellor. For our next intake, attendance is required 1 day a week 9.30am to 4.30pm, term time only for 2 years.

The programme contains an in-depth module on personal development, as well as counselling practice, professional development and counselling theory and psychology modules.

You will develop your counselling skills, your understanding of the counselling process and expand your ability to be in a professional relationship with your client. You will do this within a Person Centred or Integrated framework and in the second year you will visit a range of counselling models.

You will be required to carry out 100 hours of counselling work with clients (in addition to counselling practice with peers) over the duration of the programme through placements with counselling agencies across Cornwall. We have strong links with placement providers and can support this process. You will need to keep accurate records of your client work, and if the placement does not provide supervision, you will need to engage a counselling supervisor to support your client work. Again, we can offer you guidance with this. Undertaking Person-Centred personal counselling whilst you are on the course is required and we would expect a minimum of 8 sessions with a qualified counsellor to be completed by the end of the course.

Additional expenses to budget for throughout the programme (please note these are the current sums and are subject to change):

Visit https://www.cornwall.ac.uk/counselling-at-cornwall-college/   to find out more about the Cornwall Counselling Institute

Personal counselling – approximately £30 upwards per hour.

Supervision – if not paid for or supplied by your placement, approximately £25 upwards per hour for individual supervision and approximately £20 per hour for group supervision. Across 2 years this will amount to around £400

Enhanced DBS Certificate (DBS means Disclosure and Barring Service, previously known as the Enhanced CRB) – £44. Students will need to meet the cost of their own DBS; however, many placements provide these free of charge.

Please note, that there is no automatic progression route between our courses. Each qualification requires a rigorous assessment process including an interview, and due to limited places, you may be placed on a waiting list or may not be successful on your first application.

You will need two qualifications to apply for the Diploma. A practical skills-based counselling qualification, from Level 2 upwards which contains tutor observations of skills practice, and have a qualification that carries 120 HE credits. This is usually our Level 4, a foundation degree, full degree or an equivalent qualification.

The Level 2 is required in addition to higher qualifications as all candidates need to evidence a level of competency using counselling skills, prior to acceptance on this professional training course.

Please note that Further Education qualifications do not carry Higher Education credits, therefore CPCAB qualifications at any level will need to be supported by a further qualification which carries 120 HE credits (Please see the Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Counselling which carries 120 HE credits on the Cornwall College website)

There are no exams on the course. Assessment is through written coursework, presentations and practical elements. We use a self, peer and tutor assessment model. We only provide the programme on a part time basis to provide the time needed for completion of the academic and practical components of the course.

Possible Progression (subject to approval):

– BA (Hons) Counselling Studies (Top Up). Two years part-time at Cornwall College, containing a Counselling Supervisor Qualification in the second year.

Possible Careers:

– Counsellor/Supervisor
– Counselling Lecturer/Trainer/Teacher
– Community Worker
– Youth Counsellor
