Film and Media Students UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology

If you want to work in television, film, journalism, advertising, radio, or animation then our award-winning media department can help you achieve a bright career. Our former students are now working all over the world as camera operators, film directors and producers on exciting projects such as Star Wars films, American Idol, The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and more.

We offer two options for you to start your studies in the media and film industry depending on your GCSE results. Our Level 3 course offers you the choice of university study or successful employment on completion of your course. Our Level 2 course is ideal should your GCSE results not be what you expected, with the option to progress to Level 3.

The extended diploma is coursework based, giving you complete creative freedom. It’s all about giving you the practical skills and experience to lead a creative production.

You’ll learn about and put to good use a selection of professional equipment; take full advantage of the television and sound studios and great edits using the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite

As well as using all this industry-standard equipment as part of your studies, you’ll also take part in visiting lectures explaining their experiences and how they got into the industry; we run several trips each year including events and competitions which will help you discover routes into the creative sector.

If you are interested in building a career in the television, film, journalism or advertising industries, our two year Level 3 Creative Media Production course is perfect. You will have a wide variety of projects to complete and you will develop your understanding of camera work, film production, video & photo editing, journalism, animation, and much more. You will also take part in our award winning film school.

This course gives you the required media skills and experience to work in the industry. You’ll learn about manual camera operation and composition, professional sound recording, script-writing, journalism, film production, editing techniques, creative software and lots more including our two week intensive nationally recognised film making machine, Film School.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification.
• Functional Skills Level 2 in English and/or Maths will be considered as alternatives to GCSE, but a GCSE resit may be required depending on grade.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and maths and/or English at GCSE Grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.

You’ll have four grade C/4 qualifications, one of which is in English or maths. You’ll be ready to discuss your specific media interests at interview stage and you should bring with you an example of work.

You’ll complete work experience and industry placements during the course, and these could include working with production companies locally, creating new content for local business – video, print, and animation. This is outside the classroom, in a real working environment. Begin thinking about what you might like to do and think about how you will get there.

You will be assessed in a range of developmental projects throughout the year, with feedback from staff identifying your strengths to develop and skills to improve. Once those formative modules are complete, you will design, pitch and create your own final project that will determine your mark for the entire year of work.

This will be graded at either a PASS, MERIT or DISTICTION, and these can take any form; from music video, magazine, short film, documentary, animation, photographic exhibition…anything that demonstrates your skills and learning!

Employment in the industry such as camera operator, DOP, producer, director, production runner, journalist, animator, video editor, sound designer and much more.

University study on courses such as Media production, Broadcasting, Film production, Media Marketing and Journalism at other local and national universities.

Past students have gone on to work in TV production and presenting, advertising and marketing, journalism, film production, radio production, public relations and multi-media web design.
