Course information

A student studying carpentry This Level 2 qualification is the ideal starting point if you want to pursue a career as a furniture designer and maker, with a particular focus on wood craft.

If you have a creative soul with practical ability, a course in furniture making may be an ideal route to a rewarding career. Furniture design is a specialised field where function and fashion collide. Furniture has evolved and changed with the times, some styles have remained constant throughout the years, while others have drastically changed or become obsolete.

We offer two ways to train in furniture design and making, either full-time at college or part-time as an apprentice. You may wish to start full-time and build your skills and confidence before moving on to an apprenticeship. Whatever your prior knowledge or experience, we can offer you a starting point on the road to a creative and rewarding career.

If you do decide to take the apprenticeship route you will work with an employer in the furniture making sector, while attending college on a day release basis. If you are interested in the apprenticeship route, our recruitment team can help you get started.

You will build your practical skills in our state-of-the-art workshops while learning the theoretical side of product development with our team of expert friendly medal-winning lecturers, many of whom are designing and producing their own furniture at a commercial level. This course lasts for a year and can be studied full-time or as part of an apprenticeship.

GCSE English and maths at grade 3 or above, ideally with some prior woodwork experience.

The Furniture Design & Making Diploma Level 3 or the Furniture Making & Design Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3.
