Course information

Student mechanic working on HGV If you have an interest in heavy vehicles like HGV’s, Cranes, other large vehicle you see on the road and have your sights set on becoming a mechanic, then this is the course for you and will be your first step in a career in automotive engineering.

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our workshop, learning by doing as you work on a range of vehicles over 7.5 tonne.

You will be looking at everything including engines, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission, and electronics. If it’s on a HGV, you’ll be studying it and developing all of the essential skills you need as a mechanic, carrying out maintenance and repair activities as you progress through the course.

Our workshop features industry-standard equipment and kit, exactly like a working garage. We also have a strong partnership with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), so employers know an automotive qualification from The Cornwall College Group means you have the very best skills as a mechanic or technician. Therefore, if you are a bit of a Heavy vehicle fan and want a career working with Heavy vehicles, this is the best place to start the next stage of your career either further education or an apprenticeship..

As a Level 2 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to how components work, how they are removed and refitted according to manufacturer’s specification, the automotive industry and developing your essential skills. You will be learning from experienced automotive professionals and mechanics, who are there to give you the very best start to your career.

This one-year technical certificate will expand on from the introduction course to how the systems work and operate using components and terminology used in the heavy vehicle industry; you will learn how the systems work and how they interact with one another. By gaining the skills to remove and re-fit all the specific systems of heavy vehicle maintenance and repair you’ll be prepared for the more specialised practical repair, installation and diagnostic elements of further qualifications.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

Grade 4 in maths/English, equivalent Level 1 in the specific area or industry experience which will be discussed at the interview.

If you are under 19 at the start of the course you will require a work experience placement, this will be discussed with you at interview.

You will be assessed throughout the course by a combination of online assessment, practical assignments, written assignments and multi-choice exams.

Once you’ve finished the Level 2 course, you will have an internationally recognised industry qualification, you’ll have a real understanding of light vehicle maintenance and repair and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 3 courses. We also offer apprenticeships across the automotive industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider that option. The Automotive industry is the fastest moving technology based industry, why not be part of it.
