This 10-week evening taster course provides a hands-on introduction to our fantastic Access to Creative Arts course. The evening course will introduce you to a variety of creative art and design techniques. Each session will focus on one key area, giving you a snapshot of the creative process and offering the chance to try out new skills in a supportive environment. It’s a fantastic way to explore your creativity and decide if you’d like to take your art and design studies further.

Course Learning Outcomes:

• Explore various art and design techniques through hands-on workshops.
• Develop a better understanding of different creative disciplines.
• Build confidence in using a variety of materials and tools.
• Discover your own creative interests and gain insight into further study opportunities.

This taster course is a fun, low-pressure way to dip your toes into the world of art and design and decide whether you want to pursue it more seriously in the future.

There is a £30 materials fee for this course. Learners should also bring their own sketchbooks.

Week 1: Introduction to 2D Art & Mixed Media

Activity: Get started with basic 2D techniques using mixed media materials such as pencil, watercolour, and ink. Focus on creating layered artwork by combining different materials. You will experiment with collage and texture-building to enhance your compositions.

• Introduction to materials and techniques.
• Simple mixed media project using collage, paint, and ink.


Week 2: Colour Theory Basics

Activity: Learn the fundamentals of colour theory, including how to mix colours and understand the colour wheel. Experiment with creating harmonies like complementary and analogous colours in small exercises.

• Brief overview of colour theory.
• Hands-on colour mixing and creating colour schemes on small compositions.


Week 3: Introduction to Printmaking

Activity: Focus on basic printmaking techniques. You’ll learn the essentials of creating a simple linocut or monoprint, allowing you to experience how texture and design can be transferred onto paper.

• Introduction to linocut or monoprinting.
• Practical activity: Create your own simple print using basic techniques.


Week 4: Basic Photography Skills

Activity: Explore how to capture strong photographic images by learning about composition, lighting, and basic camera settings. This week will focus on taking photos within the class environment, experimenting with different angles and perspectives.

• Basic photography composition and techniques.
• Practical photography exercise focusing on indoor lighting and composition.


Week 5: Typography & Lettering Basics

Activity: Delve into the world of typography and hand lettering. This session will explore how to use type and lettering to create visually compelling designs. You'll learn about the anatomy of letters, the principles of typefaces, and experiment with different lettering styles to create your own hand-drawn typographic designs.

• Introduction to typography: understanding typefaces, font families, and spacing.
• Hands-on practice: Experimenting with hand lettering and calligraphy tools.
• Simple project: Create a typographic piece using various styles and techniques.

Week 6: Textile Design Exploration with Batik Dyeing

Activity: Explore the ancient art of Batik dyeing. This session will focus on traditional methods of using wax and dye to create intricate patterns on fabric. You’ll learn the basics of the Batik process, including applying wax to fabric and dyeing it to create beautiful, detailed designs.

• Introduction to Batik: Materials, tools, and the dyeing process.
• Learn the basics of applying wax to fabric to create resist patterns.
• Hands-on project: Create a small Batik piece, such as a fabric panel or scarf.


Week 7: Life Drawing Fundamentals

Activity: Learn how to sketch the human form in basic poses. The emphasis will be on observation, proportions, and simple line drawing techniques to capture the human figure in its simplest form.

• Introduction to life drawing: basic anatomy and proportions.
• Quick, timed drawing exercises with a live model.


Week 8: 3D Design & Sculpture Introduction

Activity: Get hands-on with 3D materials like clay or wire. You will learn the basics of sculpture by creating small 3D models, focusing on shape, texture, and balance.

• Introduction to 3D design and sculptural techniques.
• Practical exercise: Create a small clay sculpture or wire model.


Week 9: Ceramics – Hand building Techniques

Activity: Learn basic hand building techniques in ceramics. You’ll explore how to form simple shapes using clay and basic tools, focusing on texture and form.

• Introduction to hand building with clay.
• Hands-on project: Create a small ceramic object (e.g., a bowl or small sculpture).


Week 10: Personal Creative Project & Showcase

Activity: In the final session, you’ll have the chance to work on a small personal creative project, choosing your favourite technique or medium from the past weeks. You’ll also prepare a mini showcase of your work to share with the group.

• Final project creation using any technique covered in the course.
• Informal showcase and group discussion about the creative process.

Following on from this course, you may opt to enroll to the full course Access to Creative Arts available at the college to support you with progressing onto a higher education Art Degree.
