This course introduces adult learners to a range of textile printing and dyeing techniques. Students will explore traditional and contemporary methods, from natural dyeing to screen printing, heat transfer, and foil application. Over the 10 weeks, they will develop a foundation in fabric preparation, composition, and layering techniques. By the end of the course, learners will have produced a portfolio of samples and a final textile piece showcasing their newly acquired skills.

By the end of the course, learners will:

• Understand fabric preparation, mordanting, and dye-fixing techniques.
• Develop skills in various textile printing methods, including natural dyes, screen printing, and heat transfer.
• Experiment with colour, pattern, and composition.
• Learn about sustainability and eco-friendly dyeing methods.
• Produce a final textile piece incorporating learned techniques.

Please note: A £30 material fee will be charged for this course.

Week 1: Introduction & Fabric Preparation

• Overview of textile printing techniques covered in the course.
• Discussion on fabric types, fibre content, and preparation.
• Introduction to mordants and fabric treatments.
• Preparing fabric swatches for upcoming weeks.
• Demonstration: How to create a dye journal.


Week 2: Bundle Dyeing with Natural Materials

• Introduction to bundle dyeing and eco-printing.
• Discussion on natural dyes, plant materials, and colour fastness.
• Hands-on workshop: Creating botanical prints on fabric using steam setting.
• Troubleshooting and tips for achieving vibrant prints.


Week 3: Shibori Techniques & Indigo Dyeing

• History and cultural significance of Shibori and indigo dyeing.
• Demonstration of various Shibori folding, clamping, and tying techniques.
• Hands-on workshop: Dyeing fabric with indigo vats.
• Developing patterns through multiple dips.


Week 4: Screen Printing Basics

• Introduction to screen printing on textiles.
• Exploring stencil-based screen-printing techniques.
• Hands-on workshop: Printing repeat patterns using cut-paper stencils.
• Layering colours and experimenting with transparency.


Week 5: Advanced Screen Printing & Colour Mixing

• Introduction to photo emulsion screen printing.
• Exposing screens with hand-drawn or photographic designs.
• Hands-on workshop: Printing onto different fabric types.
• Experimenting with multi-colour prints and overlapping techniques.


Week 6: Heat Transfer Dyes & Sublimation Printing

• Understanding heat transfer dyes and sublimation techniques.
• Demonstration of painting with disperse dyes for transfer onto synthetic fabrics.
• Hands-on workshop: Printing using heat press techniques.
• Layering and blending colours for unique effects.


Week 7: Metallic Foils & Special Effects

• Introduction to metallic foils and their application in textile printing.
• Exploring adhesive-based foil techniques.
• Hands-on workshop: Applying foils to fabric for decorative effects.
• Experimenting with combining foils and screen printing.


Week 8: Silk Painting Techniques

• Introduction to silk painting and gutta resist techniques.
• Hands-on workshop: Painting on silk using dyes and resists.
• Experimenting with blending colours and creating fluid designs.
• Exploring layering techniques for complex compositions.


Week 9: Independent Project – Developing a Final Piece

• Reviewing all learned techniques.
• Planning a final textile piece incorporating at least two printing methods.
• Individual guidance and technical troubleshooting.
• Beginning production of the final piece.


Week 10: Finishing & Showcase

• Completing final pieces.
• Fabric finishing techniques: Fixing dyes, steaming, and washing.
• Mini showcase: Presenting work and discussing techniques used.
• Course reflection and feedback.

Following on from this course, you may opt to take the Access to Creative Arts course available at the college to support you with progressing onto a higher education Art Degree.
