Course information

Catering Students This course is ideal if you have a passion for the food, drink Industry, and enjoy working as part of a hospitality team. Completing this course is your first step to working in a professional kitchen or restaurant

The course covers all the basic duties to become a chef or a hospitality staff member. You will maintain a safe working place to preparing and cooking food items.

You will get real-life experience working and learning in our professional kitchens and contribute towards providing food in our restaurants or complete on external work placement.

You will be assessed throughout the course to check on your progress. The course consists of knowledge tests and ongoing practical assessments throughout the year. You will need to pass all assessments to gain the qualification.

This qualification provides a real opportunity for you to gain work specific skills and knowledge in Food Preparation and Cooking.

This qualification covers the knowledge and skills you will need to enter work in the Catering Industry.

You will learn many of the techniques used in preparation and cookery, including:

Maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working practice
Work effectively as part of a hospitality team
Cooking methods
Preparation and cooking of hot and cold dishes
Food and drink service

You will also receive personal tutorials which will provide opportunities to set your personal targets and to carryout self-evaluation and reflection.

You will be taught by industry led tutors, in industry standard restaurants open to the public.

No previous industry experience in catering or hospitality is required.

However, you will need to have a minimum of two GCSEs minimum grade E or grade 2 in English and mathematics or an equivalent qualification. You will continue to study English and maths as part of this course.

At Cornwall College, we recognise that applicants without these qualifications can often offer a high level of competence as well as life experience and we will therefore consider all applications on their merits alongside their qualifications. You will continue to develop your skills of Maths, English & Employability as a part of your study programme. If you are unsure as to whether or not you meet the requirements, please call the Catering & Hospitality department and ask to speak to the course manager who will be happy to discuss it with you.

You will be required to find a work placement while on the course. The tutors will help you find a placement or gain work experience in are training kitchen and restaurants.

You will be assessed through Practical assessment, Theory Lesson bespoke to your course, and through multi-choice exams. This will occur when you feel ready and the teaching staff feel you are ready for the assessment process.

Once you have finished the Level 1 course, you will have a real understanding of essential catering and hospitality industry and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 2 courses. We also offer apprenticeships across the hospitality industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider that option.
