Course information

Automotive Courses If you can’t get enough of cars and have your sights set on becoming a mechanic, then this is the course for you and will be your first step in a career in automotive engineering.

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our workshop, learning by doing as you work on a range of cars and vehicles.

You’ll be looking at everything: engines, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission, and electronics. Basically, if it’s in a car, you’ll be studying it and developing all of the essential skills you need as a mechanic, carrying out maintenance and repair activities as you progress through the course.

Our workshop features industry-standard equipment and kit, exactly like a working garage. We also have a strong partnership with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), so employers know an automotive qualification from The Cornwall College Group means you have the very best skills as a mechanic or technician. So, if you’re a bit of a petrol head and want a career working with cars and vehicles, this is the best place to start.

As a Level 1 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to the automotive industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced automotive professionals and mechanics, who are there to give you the very best start to your career.

This one-year introduction will explain the systems, components and terminology used in the automotive industry, you will learn how the systems work and how they interact with one another. By gaining an introduction to all the systems of a car, how they work and how they interact with one another, you will be prepared for the more specialised practical repair, installation and diagnostic elements of further qualifications.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Two or more GCSEs at Grade 2 or above, or successful competition of Entry Level Qualification.
• Learners with relevant industry experience but no GCSEs at Grade 2 may be considered based on interview.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

GCSEs in English and maths at grade 3 or equivalent. If you do not meet these entry requirements, we do offer an Entry Level 3 qualification for one year that will then allow you to go on to this diploma.

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

You will be assessed through online assessment, practical assignments and through multi-choice exams.

Once you’ve finished the Level 1 course, you’ll have a real understanding of light vehicle maintenance and repair and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 2 and 3 courses. We also offer apprenticeships across the automotive industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider that option.
