Automotive Courses If you want to make it to the top of the car industry, if you’re going to be one of the very best automotive engineers out there, then look no further than this course.

Written by employers within the automotive retail industry, the Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard is suitable for aspiring technicians. Learn to service and repair light vehicles, replace components, solve complex faults, use diagnostic methods and equipment, as well as a whole array of other skills.

A motor vehicle technician services and repairs light vehicles, working in either a dealership that focuses on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage. Working on all systems found within the vehicle, the nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts, right through to diagnosing and rectifying complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.

Everything on this course has been designed to give you an advanced skillset and everything you need to excel in the industry. You’ll be studying the components of vehicle maintenance in detail, working with complex systems across different vehicles, benefitting not only from theoretical and practical training at college, but also the knowledge/skills of your colleagues at work, and peers in your class, all of whom with different and varied experience across our very diverse industry.

Our workshop features industry-standard equipment and kit, exactly like a working garage and because of our association with the IMI, garages and workshops throughout the UK recognise that our graduates are talented and confident mechanics, ready to get to work in any automotive setting, employers therefore know an automotive qualification from The Cornwall College Group means you have the very best skills as an automotive technician.

Designed in phases you will learn: Foundation skills assisting with the productivity of others, routine service and inspection procedures, simple diagnosis and repair procedures, Intermediate diagnosis and repair procedures, complex diagnosis and repair procedures and complete systems understanding and repair of major components.

Typically it is expected that it will take three years for you to attain the required level of competence in the workplace although it may be sooner if you already have significant training and practical experience.

Applicants will need:

- Interest in motor vehicles
- General analytical and mechanical skills
- Research and problem-solving skills
- Organised, methodical and good attention to detail
- Good communication skills, both oral and written
- Works as part of a team to deliver excellent service
- English and Maths GCSE grade 4 (or equivalent)
- Offer of a workspace from an employer

Visits/Trips to includ: Autosport show, Haynes Motor Museum and a range of local employers, Guest Speakers from IMI, suppliers and specialists and Community and charitable projects.

You will be assessed through the monitoring of knowledge, behaviours and skills by your coach and mentor, achievement of gateway assessments (online and practical) and completion of End point assessments – online exams, skills assessments and professional discussion.

All assessment activity will be planned and the timetable shared with you at the beginning of the apprenticeship. The assessments will be linked to the taught units and assessments will coincide with unit progress and completion. You will be informed of progress after the assessments, with overall progress tracked and available to view to ensure you can monitor progress towards agreed targets.

Once you’ve finished the apprenticeship, you’ll have an in-depth understanding of light vehicle components, systems and diagnostic techniques making you a valuable technician and part of the automotive industry.

Armed with your increased knowledge, skills and Level 3 attainment, you can progress with confidence; building on your aspirations with the potential to become an MOT tester or electric vehicle specialist.

Or you could continue studying one of our electric vehicle courses or towards a range of Higher Education courses such as advanced Vehicle Diagnostics and Management, complete professional development to become a master technician or perhaps you want to enter the world of motorsport.
