Course information

If you have an interest in civil engineering and technical construction, the T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning is the perfect course for you.

T Levels offer a unique blend of classroom learning and a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) industry placement time. If you aspire to become an architect or work in planning and civil engineering, the T Level will be well suited with its diverse curriculum and its extensive career pathways that are available upon completion.

The T Level will provide you with the knowledge and experience required to open the door to skilled employment, further study or a Higher Apprenticeship.

Technical areas of study could include Surveying, Design, Civil Engineering, Planning and BIM (Building Information Modelling).

Alongside the specialist skills, you will develop a general understanding of construction, including:

• Health and safety
• The science behind building design, surveying, and planning.
• Making accurate and appropriate measurements
• Construction methodology
• Relationship management and customer service
• Digital engineering technique
• Mathematical techniques to solve construction problems
• Construction design principles and processes
• Sustainability and the environmental impact of construction
• Project management
• Budgeting and resource allocation
• Procurement
• Risk management

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification.
• Functional Skills Level 2 in English and/or Maths will be considered as alternatives to GCSE, but a GCSE resit may be required depending on grade.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and maths and/or English at GCSE Grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and/or Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification.
• Functional Skills Level 2 in English and/or Maths will be considered as alternatives to GCSE, but a GCSE resit may be required depending on grade.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and maths and/or English at GCSE Grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.

The T Level includes an industry placement of a 315 hours (approximately 45 days).

Assessment is carried out through a hybrid model of assignments, project work and exams.

Each module is assessed by means of a series of set assignments that involve a combination of scenario-based tasks linked to practical exercises, individual study, project work and presentations.

Summative assessment is set by the Awarding Organisation.

HNC in Construction, employment within the construction industry, a Higher Apprenticeship or University.
