Course information

If you are interested in a career in hairdressing then this course will equip you with the latest skills and know how.

This qualification has been specifically designed to develop both practical and theory skills.

All aspects of hairdressing will be covered including cutting, colouring, perming and styling. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate these skills in our commercial salon on clients.

Throughout this course you will build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding as well as complete end of unit online exams.

You will need to complete external work experience for one day a week.

This qualification covers a wide range of skills and knowledge needed to prepare for a career in the hairdressing industry.

Training in purpose-built salons, you'll learn in a dynamic, professional commercial environment. You'll be trained to industry standards in cutting and styling, setting and dressing, coloring and lightening, advising clients, and creating styles.

Some of the areas you will cover include:

• Cutting women's hair
• Coloring and lightening hair
• The art of dressing hair
• Shampooing and conditioning
• Client consultation

In addition to practical skills, our team of industry-trained professionals will guide you through the theory, offering advice and demonstrating techniques.

You'll also have the opportunity to work on reception, enhancing your customer service, product promotion, and retail sales skills.

Students are expected to wear a uniform and present themselves professionally, as practical work will be assessed in the commercial salon.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

A minimum of GCSE grade 4 in English OR maths. You will be required to study the subject in which you have not gained a grade 4 in whilst completing you course. If you do not gain a grade 4 in either English or Maths you will need to study the Level 1 course first.

At Cornwall College, we recognise that applicants without these qualifications can often offer a high level of competence as well as life experience and we will therefore consider all applications on their merits alongside their qualifications.

We'll also ask you to share why you're interested in this course. This helps us make sure the course fits perfectly with your career goals.

If you are unsure as to whether or not you meet the requirements, please call the department and ask to speak to the study programme manager who will be happy to discuss it with you.

You will need salon uniform and specific equipment. Full advice will be provided before the start of the course.

You are expected to find an external work placement while on the course. This will help you gain valuable work experience to help you develop a career in this exciting industry. However, we have work place coordinators that can help you or you may be able to gain work experience in our own commercial Salons open to the public.

There will be a mixture of practical assessments, online exams and assignments.

Upon completing the Hairdressing Level 2 course, you'll have a solid understanding of the hairdressing industry and be prepared to advance to Level 3.

Cornwall College offers a complete pathway in Hairdressing, allowing you to further your qualifications through additional courses, barbering, or apprenticeships. Our past students have gone on to manage their own businesses, work on cruise liners, or become teachers.

We also offer apprenticeships across the hair and beauty industry, so you can earn while you learn.

This qualification can lead to jobs in various settings, including:
