Leyland Trucks Donates HGV to Cornwall College Camborne

Cornwall College Camborne, part of Cornwall College Group (CCG), has received a significant boost to its Heavy Vehicle training programme thanks to the generous donation of an HGV truck from Leyland Trucks.

The addition of the vehicle will provide students with hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment, ensuring they develop the skills and confidence required to excel in the sector.

Strengthening Industry Partnerships

This donation marks an important collaboration between the college and Leyland Trucks, a leading UK manufacturer with a strong commitment to supporting technical education and workforce development. The company is also a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and holds a Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award, demonstrating its dedication to supporting those transitioning from military service into civilian careers.

Neil Atkinson, Engineering & Automotive Curriculum Area Manager at Cornwall College, welcomed the new addition to the college’s facilities:

“This generous donation from Leyland Trucks allows us to train our students to an incredibly high, like-for-like standard. Our long history of training military personnel on DAF trucks continues with this latest addition, ensuring recruits gain hands-on experience with industry-relevant technology. The opportunity extends to all our students, both military and civilian, reinforcing our commitment to delivering the best training possible.”

Enhancing an ‘Outstanding’ Learning Environment

Cornwall College Camborne was recently graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, recognising its exceptional learning opportunities and strong industry partnerships. The addition of this HGV truck further strengthens the college’s ability to deliver cutting-edge training, ensuring students have access to the very best resources.

Phil Jones, Managing Director at Leyland Trucks, said: “We’re giving this DAF XD a second life – one that directly supports military training. This reflects our commitment to building real pathways for armed forces personnel into civilian careers in truck design, manufacturing, engineering and service.

“Supporting and recruiting ex-military and reservist talent is a key part of our culture, and we look forward to strengthening these relationships as we progress through the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.”

Investing in the Future of HGV Training

The donation builds on the college’s ongoing investment in heavy vehicle training, following the recent addition of two new HGVs, funded by the Department for Education (DfE).

For those interested in pursuing a career in the heavy vehicle industry, Cornwall College Camborne offers a range of courses, including the Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Standard.
