A dedicated member of staff from Cornwall College has been shortlisted for the “Apprenticeship Champion of the Year” award at this year’s prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards.
Apprenticeship advisor Charlie Cook, from the College’s St Austell campus, has been recognised for her exceptional level of learner support and for demonstrating her enthusiastic dedication to apprenticeships.
Commenting on the remarkable achievement, Charlie expressed her driving force is the apprentices’ mental health and wellbeing.
“I’m immensely proud of myself for being able to support, guide and ultimately save a life. I firmly believe that our best selves can only emerge when our mental health is prioritised. As a mental health first aider, I ensure all my learners can come to me to seek the help and support they need,” she continued.
Laetitia Mayne, deputy head of campus commented on Charlie’s dedication to the support of the children, young people and health department:
“We’re so please for this well-deserved recognition. Charlie has identified where apprentices may need additional pastoral support and ensures they can access this through the College. Charlie works well to engage with new employers and existing ones, and is keen to showcase the reason why The Cornwall College Group is the top performing apprenticeship provider in the Southwest,” added Laetitia.
The nomination has sparked an overwhelming outpouring of praise and support from both staff and students who have been touched by Charlie’s commitment to apprentices.
Kris Ohlsson, an apprenticeship advisor, said: “I have never worked with someone so dedicated and emotionally invested in their role. Charlie’s inspirational effort and love shine through in every task she undertakes. She genuinely cares about her students’ success and progress.”
Another colleague, Tamara Taylor, expressed her excitement for Charlie’s nomination for Apprenticeship Champion of the Year.
“This is such a great achievement for Charlie. She goes above and beyond, finding solutions for businesses and apprentices to meet their unique needs, preventing stress and anxiety amongst young people in Cornwall. Her gentle and approachable nature is especially appreciated by those with special educational needs. She’s proven to be a worthy nominee for this prestigious award,” added Tamara.
