Student from Cornwall writes his own success story

A Progression Pathways student from Cornwall College St Austell has been promoting his work as a published author, sharing his literary success with a wider audience.

Joshua Holten has written three books – Twisted Valley, Twisted Valley 2: The Mystery of the Whisper Witches and Mother of an Empire, all available on Waterstones and Amazon.

To support his growing success, the college has provided opportunities for Joshua to promote his books on campus, including book signings where staff and students can meet him and purchase signed copies.

These events have helped him engage with the college community while gaining recognition for his work.

Reflecting on his experience, Joshua said: “I used to write books as a child and focused on my love of nature, but later I started to develop a new passion for more magical and mystical ideas, which is where the idea for my first published book, Twisted Valley, came from.”

The story follows lonely six-year-old schoolboy Fergus whose life changes when he’s forced by mysterious magic to live his life deep in the woods full of fairy-tale characters, witches, dragons and evil owl queens. It’s his mission to uncover a mystery that keeps the woodland and the creatures under a powerful curse.

Following the success of Twisted Valley, Joshua continued expanding his storytelling, developing even more intricate fantasy worlds.

Twisted Valley 2: The Mystery of the Whisper Witches builds upon the magic of the first book, while Mother of an Empire explores new adventures and themes.

Speaking about his creative journey, he said: “My second and third books allowed me to push my imagination even further. I love writing stories that transport people into other worlds, full of magic, mystery and adventure.”

Joshua’s journey to becoming an author is nothing short of inspiring. Overcoming early life challenges, he found a stable and supportive home with Diane Hollies, a Shared Lives carer in Cornwall.

Calling her his “supergran,” he dedicated his first book to Diane, acknowledging her unwavering support and the profound impact she has had on his life.

He explained: “She helps me with concentration and life skills like cooking or using different things around the house. Di also provides me with a great support system, which is amazing.”

Joshua’s story is one of resilience, passion and the power of encouragement.

With the backing of Cornwall College and the support of those around him, Joshua’s achievements continue to inspire others, proving that with determination and the right opportunities, anything is possible.
