Aspiring construction operatives and civil engineers can now apply for a new and exciting hands-on Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship programme at Cornwall College.
From January, in partnership with WBM Groundworks, Champion Groundworks, Cornwall Groundworks and Landscaping, KHC Groundworks and Morcom Construction, Cornwall College Camborne will welcome the first cohort of groundworks apprentices, to prepare them for the construction industry.
The apprenticeship will equip apprentices with the skills, knowledge and experience in groundworks, which includes the installation of drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways and carrying out hard landscaping.
Commenting on this opportunity, Richard Billington, curriculum area manager for construction and building services, said: “Following the successful launch of our Roofing, Craft Bricklayer and Low Carbon Heating apprenticeships earlier in the year, we are now looking for apprentices to study on our new Groundworks apprenticeship.”
Richard added: “This course is designed to address the growing skills gap in the construction industry and provide a comprehensive training programme that not only meets the current demands of the sector but also anticipates future needs.”
Applicants will learn to work with all on-site construction trades, such as bricklayers and plant operatives.
In addition to the technical skills, the programme also emphasises the development of teamwork, communication and problem-solving, which are essential for effective collaboration on-site and for career advancement within the industry.
Lisa Piper, head of business development at The Cornwall College Group, expressed the benefits of working alongside the construction sector: “By collaborating with industry leaders like KHC Groundworks and Champion Groundworks, we ensure that our apprentices benefit from real-world experience and excellent mentorship from some of the best in the business.”
The Groundworker Apprenticeship at Cornwall College is open to individuals of all backgrounds, including school leavers, career changers and those already working in construction who wish to expand their skills and gain a recognised qualification.
