What are T Levels?

You’ve heard all about A Levels, but what about T Levels? And are they right for you?

T Levels are a new type of qualification that were first introduced in 2020. They follow on from GCSEs and are equivalent to three A Levels.

The two-year qualification was created in consultation with employers and businesses, to help students gain the skills, knowledge and experience that are really needed to thrive in the world of work.

They differ from A Levels, as they combine classroom-based study with practical learning and work placements, providing a direct route into employment or higher study. T Levels are also recognised by UCAS, with a starred distinction in a T Level being worth the equivalent of three A*s at A Level.

What are T Levels like?

You’ll choose one subject area to study, and around 80% of your course will be spent in the classroom, with the remaining 20% spent on a valuable work placement in a relevant workplace. This usually takes the form of a three-month work placement at the end of your course.

What subjects can I study?

We currently offer T Levels in the following areas:

  • Agriculture
  • Engineering
  • Plumbing
  • Healthcare
  • Animal Management
  • Creative Media
  • Design, Surveying and Planning
  • Education and Early Years
  • Woodland Management

What’s the difference between T Levels and apprenticeships?

While T Levels are typically based in the classroom for 80% of the course and on-the-job for the remaining 20%, apprenticeships are usually reversed, with 80% of the time spent working with an employer.

Apprenticeships are best suited to people who know what career path they want to follow, and feel ready to enter the workforce after leaving school. T Levels give you the opportunity to experience an industry while you continue your studies, with the opportunity to go straight into work afterwards or to continue studying and specialise later.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of six GCSEs, with English and Maths at grade 4 or above. Learners progressing from a Level 2 course will need a Level 2 Diploma with a good Merit profile, along with English and Maths at grade 4 or above.

If you don’t feel ready to go on to a T Level straight away, we also offer a one-year Foundation T Level course that is designed to prepare you for a T Level. Here, you can expect to:

  • Gain technical knowledge and practical skills relevant to your chosen T Level subject area
  • Get ready for your T Level with industry work experience and preparation
  • Develop industry-relevant English, Maths, and digital skills
  • Benefit from focused individual support and personal development
  • Plan the right next step for you
